ヒマラヤユキノシタ（Bergenia stracheyi）

ヒマラヤユキノシタは、早春のまだ寒さが残る時期に、やさしいピンクの花を咲かせ、花壇を明るく彩ります。革質で厚みのある楕円形の大きな葉を地面に張りつくように広げ、どっしりとした安定感もあります。太い根茎が横に伸びて樹木のような形になり、年数を経るごとに風格も増します。

ベルゲニア属は、東～中央アジアに8種があり、園芸品種が多数育成されています。ヒマラヤユキノシタという名前は、もともとはベルゲニア・ストラケイ（Bergenia stracheyi）につけられた和名ですが、現在は、交配種も含めてベルゲニア属全体がヒマラヤユキノシタと呼ばれています。大型種から小型種までさまざまで、花が丸く固まって咲くもの、長い穂になるものなどがあり、花色も赤から白まで幅があります。春だけでなく、秋にも咲く二季咲き品種も育成されています。株の成長はゆっくりですが、一度根づくと何年もほとんど放任でもよいくらいで、グラウンドカバープランツとして重宝します。

Himalayan Yukinoshita blooms gentle pink flowers and brightens the flower bed when the cold of the early spring still remains. A large, leathery, oval shaped leaf is spread on the ground to give it a solid sense of stability. The thick rhizome extends sideways into a tree-like shape, and its style also increases with age.

There are eight species of Bergenia, from East to Central Asia, and many horticultural varieties are cultivated. The name Himalayan Yukinoshita is originally a Japanese name given to Bergenia stracheyi, but the entire Bergenia genus, including hybrids, is now called Himalayan Yukinoshita. There are a wide variety of species ranging from large species to small ones, such as flowers that are clumped round and blooming, those that become long ears, etc., and the flower color ranges from red to white. Not only spring, but also seasonal varieties that bloom in autumn are also cultivated. Growth of the stock is slow, but once rooted, it can be used for many years and almost free, and it is useful as ground cover plants.
