クロッカス (Crocus)

クロッカスは3月に最盛期を迎え、ヨーロッパでは古くから春の訪れる告げる花とされていました。そのことから、春が青春と結びつき、「青春の喜び」という花言葉がつきました。また、春の暖かくなる時期が待ちきれないように咲くことにちなんで、「切望」という花言葉をもっています。

また、紫色の花についている「愛の後悔」という花言葉、ギリシャ神話のエピソードに由来します。美少年クロッカスは、リーズという娘と恋に落ちます。しかし、二人の結婚は許されなかったため、それぞれ自らの命を断ってしまいます。その姿を見た花の女神アフロディーテは、美少年クロッカスをクロッカスの花に、リーズを朝顔に変えたとされています。
