クリスマスローズ (Helleborus × hybridus)

クリスマスローズ（ガーデン・ハイブリッド）は無茎種（茎がなく、根茎から葉柄と花柄が別々に伸びる）のヘレボルスで、無茎種の原種を交雑させてできた園芸種を指します。人気の高い多年草で、多くは常緑ですが、落葉するものもあります。ヘレボルス・オリエンタリスが主要な交配親として用いられていたため、以前はオリエンタリス・ハイブリッド（Helleborus orientalis hybrids）と呼ばれていました。

かつては濁った花色で花弁によれがある花ばかりでしたが、濁りのない花色、丸い花弁、整った花形を目指して品種改良が行われた結果、優れた花が多数誕生しています。花色、花形のバリエーションが多く、タネでふやされている株は、1株ごとに異なる花を咲かせるので、好みの花を探す楽しみがあります。

強健で育てやすいものが多いのも特徴です。鉢植えにも庭植えにも向き、ほかの多くの草花に先駆けて花を咲かせ、冬枯れの庭を彩ります。

Christmas Rose (Garden Hybrid) is a garden species made by crossing a non-stem type (no stems, petiole and floral patterns separately extending from the rhizomes), and crossing the original species of non-stem type. It is a popular perennial grass, many are evergreen, but there are some that deciduate.
