クロッカス (Crocus) 

クロッカスは、地中海地方沿岸部などを原産とするアヤメ科サフラン属の多年草です。寒さに強いため、冬場の霜や凍結にも負けずに育ち、晩冬から早春にかけて一斉に花をつけます。原種は80種ほどあるといわれており、園芸品種としても多数の品種が販売されています。なかでも人気があるのは、ジャンヌ・ダルクと呼ばれる3月～4月に咲く大輪種や、イエローマンモスと呼ばれる2月～3月に黄色い花を咲かせる大輪種、ロマンスと呼ばれる寒咲きの小輪種などです。

なお、紀元前から料理のスパイスとして使われているサフランも、実はクロッカスの一種。つまり、クロッカスは、はるか昔から栽培され続けている歴史ある植物なのです。
